Hunt Construction Group completed one of 2009’s most significant construction projects for its work building the new Lucas Oil Stadium, the Associated General Contractors of America announced March 19.  Hunt was among eight companies to receive an Aon Build America Merit Award.

“These are the projects that redefine communities, reinvent neighborhoods and remind us that anything is possible given the right mix of craft, skill and commitment,” said J. Doug Pruitt, the association’s president.  “Despite the toughest conditions in decades, these companies found ways to awe and amaze.”

Pruitt said Hunt was selected for its work overseeing construction of the 1,800,000-square-foot stadium, which is home to the NFL’s Indianapolis Colts, NCAA basketball championships and major conventions and events.  The facility includes 63,000 seats, 150 suites, a retractable roof and a retractable window.  The stadium also incorporates the latest energy saving technology, including advanced temperature controls and energy efficient electric motors.

“Hunt is extremely proud of all the hard work from the project team on this landmark facility for Indianapolis,” said Scott Blanchard, Project Vice President for Hunt Construction Group.  “It takes a highly qualified group of individuals to make projects of this scope possible and everyone did a fantastic job getting the stadium delivered. The downtown skyline has changed because of the hard work and dedication of the project team.”

Other companies receiving Merit Awards this year included Chicago-based Pepper Construction’s Harrah’s Horseshoe Casino in Hammond, Indiana; Appleton, Wisconsin-based Hoffman LLC’s Holy Wisdom Monastery in Madison; and Milford, Massachusetts-based Consigli Construction’s Cambridge Public Library expansion and restoration.

Other Merit Award winners were Chantilly, Virginia’s Hensel Phelps for the renovation of, and addition to, the D.C. Court of Appeals; San Antonio-based Zachry Construction Corporation for its work on the San Antonio River Improvement project; Spokane’s Max J. Kuney Company for construction of Oregon’s Sauvie Island Bridge; and Omaha, Nebraska-based Kiewit Construction and Tempe, Arizona-based Sundt Construction, Inc. for their joint venture to reconstruct Tucson’s Interstate 10.

In addition to the Merit Award winners, 15 different projects were selected as the best projects of 2009 and received the Aon Build America Award.  Top prize, the Grand Award, went to Houston, Texas-based Linbeck Group for construction of the new Winspear Opera House in Dallas.  Other winners were Indianapolis-based Bowen Engineering for construction of Indiana’s Meadow Lake Wind Farm; Texas Division of McCarthy Building Companies for construction of that Dallas’ AT&T Performance Arts Center Wyly Theatre; Chicago’s Pepper Construction Group for converting Chicago’s Power House building into the Charles H. Shaw Technology & Learning Center; and Sioux Falls, South Dakota-based Jans Corporation for building the Sioux Falls Seminary.

Additional companies awarded for their work included: St. Louis, Missouri’s BSI Constructors Inc. for building that city’s new Citygarden complex; Anderson Construction Company of Fort Gaines, Georgia for renovating Alabama’s Lakepoint State Park Lodge & Guest Wings; New Orleans’ Boh Bros. Construction for building that city’s Harvey Canal Sector Gate Complex; Walsh Brothers Incorporated of Boston for renovating the Grand Dome of MIT’s Building 10; and Orlando’s Hensel Phelps Construction Co. for converting a 40-year old NASA Kennedy Space Center structure into the new Orion Space Capsule Operations and Checkout Building.

Congratulations to everyone involved for the hard work and dedication given to these projects and the communities for which they serve.
