CitiFieldHunt Construction Group in a joint venture with Bovis Lend Lease (HuntBovis), two of the nation’s top contractors, recently finished substantial completion of construction on the new home of the New York Mets – Citi Field.

HuntBovis provided preconstruction and construction management services for the new Citi Field, located in the outfield parking lot between the Mets’ former home Shea Stadium and 126th Street. The project consists of a 1.4 million-square-foot, open-air baseball stadium featuring five levels, 54 luxury suites, four restaurants and a total capacity of 45,000 including standing room.

The architect, Populous, helped ensure the ballpark was built with many similarities to the old Ebbetts Field.  The most noticeable parallel is definitely the stunning brick and precast exterior featuring granite and marble base elements.  This is a style that has become very common among ballparks and stadiums in recent years as teams have started embracing the nostalgic look of baseball’s early years.

A special design feature of the stadium is the Jackie Robinson Rotunda, a dedication to the baseball icon, who was the first player to break through the game’s racial barriers 62 years ago. Features include inlaid terrazzo flooring, four large escalators serving two levels, two monumental precast stairways, a unique steel truss system, two large digital monitors and eight large imprinted ceramic tile panels, each featuring historical photos of Jackie Robinson with family and friends.

Mets fans had their first taste of Citi Field in action during the regular season opener –
April 13th.  Designed to give fans a modern and intimate experience compared to Shea Stadium, Citi Field is a truly magnificent new ballpark from the brick exterior to the lush green outfield.  HuntBovis began work on the $600 million facility in June 2006.

The HuntBovis team is proud to have been part of the local community in bringing this impressive facility to New York.  Mets fans can now enjoy the game in a truly state-of-the-art ballpark.
